CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Switchyard, a new remote workplace, sold out their subscriptions in under four minutes for their new Charleston location.
Switchyard is a subscription-based, 24/7 work club geared towards those who either work remotely or would like an alternative to working at a cafe.
Jake Brenneman, a lifetime subscriber for Switch Yard, uses the space instead of going into coffee shops.
“I used to be a coffee shop nomad.” said Brenneman. “I work 100% remote for my tech company, and I’ve always wanted a spot like this.”

The space has multiple rooms which are centered towards different types of workflows and a laundry list of amenities.
“Blazing-fast WiFi, bookable meeting rooms, home booths, really good furniture, really thoughtful layouts,” emphasized Brandon Hinman, the creative director for Switchyards. “One of people’s favorites is top shelf, locally-roasted coffee that is free.”
Hinman said that the space helps boost peoples’ productivity, claiming that people are able to get more done in less time in these spaces due to the work-centered environment.
“This area isn’t as restrictive as a coffee shop would be in a weird way,” said Nicolas Hilaire, a recent member to the club. “I normally don’t even drink coffee, but I’d go into coffee shops, buy something so I can chill, and just be around other people.”
Hinman believes Switchyard is the future of work and is helping bring people back into shared spaces after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The hundred-dollar membership does cause hesitation for some members, but Hinman says that is as competitive as the market will allow these spaces to be, but some users feel differently.
“It’s steep.” said Hilaire, “But it’s $20 for my favorite bowl at Chipotle, and in four weeks that’s like the price of this.”
