Ahead of the event, I wanted to know when it’s time to seek professional help for mental health struggles.
What are the signs and symptoms that help determine the difference between normal, everyday issues versus those that require a greater level of help?
“Certainly everyone, all of us, the human condition is that we have mental health symptoms; anxiety, sadness and other things,” said Dr. Robert Oldham, director of Placer County’s Health and Human Services. “What’s the difference between normal human emotions and something that needs professional help?”
Dr. Oldham, a psychiatrist, offered three key things to watch for.
The signs and symptoms to seek professional help:
- When it interferes with work, school, or the ability to have fun.
- When feeling overwhelmed and a normal support system, like friends and family, isn’t enough. Or, you don’t have a support system and feel overwhelmed.
- When you’re ready to make a change.
“When you’re tired of struggling with something, it’s a great time to seek help,” Oldham said.
As part of the ongoing effort to meet mental health needs in the community, the Placer4MentalHealth Wellness Fair will have many medical and community resources available to answer questions and offer workshops on dealing with various mental health-related issues.
This includes a workshop titled “mental health support strategies for parents & caregivers.”
There will also be help on navigating complex health insurance systems.
“Really, the bottom line is we want to help people going through mental health issues or suffering through mental health issues or family members suffering from that. That’s really what this is about is getting help to people,” said Kyle Jibson, event chair and deputy Placer County district attorney.
