LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – When heading to the pump, Texans are seeing better prices than the national average.

According to AAA’s latest report, the current average price for a gallon of gas in Texas is $2.75, 39 cents cheaper than the national average. AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster says there’s a reason why gas prices are low at the moment.
“It’s an abundance of supply when it comes to crude oil on the global market,” Armbruster said. “Crude oil is the main ingredient in gasoline, it makes up 50% of the cost of each gallon of gas.”
The lull between spring travel and the start of summer is also causing a lower demand for gas. Some towns near Lubbock aren’t seeing that decrease, however.
Armbruster highlights why Lubbock has the cheapest gas prices in the state and Midland has the most expensive despite being only two hours apart.
“Some of it goes into local market dynamics,” Armbruster said, “so you’re looking at local supply and demand, certainly that plays a big role in it. The cost of distribution from one area to another. We do tend to see higher gas prices in El Paso, Midland, Odessa sometimes and we tend to see lower gas prices in the Panhandle.”
With OPEC+ announcing an increase in crude oil output in June, prices could continue to fall. It’s all just in time for summer travel and Armbruster says the drop can help families plan that road trip without having to break the bank for a vacation.
“Some market analysts anticipate this could be a summer where we’ve seen the lowest gas prices since COVID,” Armbruster said. “I would not be surprised if we see at least record travel in the automobile category when you look at modes of travel and the way people travel, so certainly I think we’re going to see a very busy summer on the roads.”
