Even though there are concerns about their economic futures, the percentage of North Carolina residents planning to travel this summer is higher than it was a year ago.

A new survey from AAA – The Auto Club Group reveals that 61% of North Carolinians plan to take a trip this summer, up from 55% from 2024, highlighting a continued upward trend in travel intentions.

And over half of those planning a vacation said they are headed to the beach.

“Despite economic uncertainties, Americans still prioritize vacations as an essential part of life,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Whether it’s a relaxing beach escape, an adventurous road trip or a cruise, people view summer travel as a vital way to invest in their well-being and create lasting memories.”

According to the survey, 38% of North Carolinians plan to take more vacations this summer, while 41% plan to take about the same number as last year.

However, 21% will take fewer trips, with 59% citing personal financial concerns and 54% worried about the economy as primary reasons.

With some travel providers, including cruise lines, offering discounts that weren’t previously available, travelers have a unique opportunity to make the most of their budgets.

“Now is the time to plan wisely,” Haas continued. “Many providers that don’t usually offer discounts are finding ways to make travel more affordable. Working with a travel agent provides even more value by securing and bundling deals, navigating restrictions, and ensuring the best experience possible.”

Destinations for summer vacations North Carolinians according the auto club’s survey:

    • 55% – Beach Destination
    • 29% – City/Major Metro Destination
    • 22% – Theme Park
    • 20% – National/state park
    • 17% – Lake Destination

June and July are set to be the peak months, with 42% opting to travel in June and 51% in July, which Hass said is the dominate months due to predictable weather, school breaks, and peak vacation demand.

But many are pushing their planning to the last minute, with 48% typically finalizing their summer trips by the end of April, and 52% waiting until after May.

“The best vacation value is secured by planning ahead,” said Haas. “Booking early ensures travelers get the ideal combination of price, availability, and choice. Waiting too long could mean missing out on preferred destinations, accommodations or deals.”

This summer, 70% of North Carolinians will stay within the continental U.S., while 11% plan trips to Europe and 13% will visit the Caribbean.

Despite the risks associated with unexpected cancellations, medical emergencies, or airline disruptions, only 28% of travelers plan to purchase travel insurance.

The top reasons North Carolina residents would opt for travel insurance include international travel (48%), expensive trips (44%), and trip cancellations (50%).

“Travel insurance protects you, your wallet, and your vacation plans. It’s the safety net that allows you to relax, enjoy your trip, and have trusted resources to navigate any hiccups,” said Haas. “We recommend working with a Travel Advisor, who can help you find the right policy to fit your needs.”

The AAA Consumer Pulse™ Survey was conducted online of 400 residents living in North Carolina from April 7-10, 2025, with a maximum margin of error of ± 4.9%. Responses were weighted by age and gender to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the adult population (18+) in the state.
